"Our musical tribute to the Beatles last November was so much fun, we knew right away we had to do more community concerts like it."

Community organizer Bill Hudson was smiling as he discussed his latest musical project — a upcoming dance concert entitled "PEACE, LOVE & ROCK N ROLL: A Musical Tribute to the '60s" which, like a similar 2009 Beatles tribute concert, will be sponsored by Whistle Pig Concerts, a non-profit effort to bring live music to Pagosa Springs.

"We held a rehearsal last Saturday, and it was probably the most fun I've ever had rehearing for a performance. The singers we have involved are simply amazing — and the instrumentalists are equally good.

"But most of all, everyone is having fun. When we finished the rehearsal, everyone wanted to schedule another one. I can't remember the last time I had musicians asking for additional rehearsals — especially musicians of this caliber. So we're putting together an extra rehearsal for this week. Just for the fun of it, mostly."

On Saturday, February 27, 2010, eighteen local musicians will be combining their voices — and electric guitars, and drums, and keyboards, and bass guitars — to celebrate "PEACE, LOVE & ROCK N ROLL: A Musical Tribute to the '60s" a dance concert scheduled for the Pagosa Springs Youth Center at 7pm.

The 18 musicians will be performing a wide variety of pop hit songs from the 1960s, including such favorites as “Proud Mary,” “Chain of Fools,” “Johnny B Goode,” “Born to be Wild,” “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay,” “California Dreamin’” and numerous other popular songs from that decade.

Pagosa Springs High School students Samantha Hunts and Zoe Fulco — shown here performing at last November's "Tribute to the Beatles" concert — will be two of the eighteen musicians contributing their talents to Saturday's upcoming dance concert at the Pagosa Springs Youth Center.  Photos by Glenn Walsh.
Performers for the concert include Barr Bentley, Charlie Brannon, Dave Chambers, Michael Coto, Lance Foster, Zoe Fulco, Bill Hudson, Samantha Hunts, June Marquez, Greg Milioto, Karma Raley, Teena Roemer, Lisa Saunders, Harvey Schwartz, Mark Sudden, Emily Tholberg, Stephen Tholberg, and Debbee Tucker.

The event is a benefit fundraiser for a new local non-profit, Pagosa Area Legal Services, which helps low income families meet legal expenses and court costs. The organization’s director, Lynda Carter, is a Pagosa Springs attorney who works on a sliding scale — and occasionally on a pro bono basis — with local families, on various types of cases, criminal and civil.

Guitarist and songwriter Stephen Tholberg — who operates the River Run Recording Studio here in Pagosa — will be handling a hefty share of the electric guitar duties for the "PEACE, LOVE & ROCK N ROLL" musical tribute to the '60s.
Tickets for the dance concert are $10 for adults, $5 for students, and $20 for a family — a family being "however many people you have in your family," according to Hudson.

The dance concert is being presented by Whistle Pig Concerts, a division of local non-profit arts organization Artstream Cultural Resources. The Pagosa Springs Youth Center will be providing desserts and refreshments for the event.

The Pagosa Springs Youth Center, PSYC, is located in the old "Powerhouse" center adjacent to Town Park on the Hermosa Street Alley. Parking is at Town Park and along Hermosa Street.

Tickets are available downtown at Black Swan Antiques and Pagosa Baking Company, and uptown at Higher Grounds Coffee Company.

So dig out your dancing shoes and mark your calendars to attend "PEACE, LOVE & ROCK N ROLL: A Musical Tribute to the '60s" on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at the Pagosa Springs Youth Center at 7pm.
